Start using cryptocurrency, quickly you’ll find hundreds of wallets out there to choose from. Popular wallets like MetaMask mostly cater to Ethereum and EVM compatible blockchains. Others like Cosmostation cater to an ecosystem like Cosmos SDK-based blockchains. In my experience, these solutions are best suited for power users who use staking and DeFi regularly. Beginners should start with a Multi-currency Wallet, particularly one that lets you hold native Bitcoin, the king of all crypto. When you start your journey into crypto, you want to make sure you have all the right tools!

We will discuss 3 mobile wallet options that I think are best suited for beginners to use. 3 main things to consider when choosing a multi-currency wallet:

  1. Does it hold Bitcoin natively?
  2. Can you use it to stake your native coins and earn rewards?
  3. Is there mobile wallet to application (dApp) integration? i.e. Wallet Connect

Celsius Wallet

The best option for passive investors is Celsius Wallet, headed by CEO Alex Mashinsky. A serial entrepreneur in the early internet age, Alex has shown a true passion for using the internet to lower costs for the average consumer. Today he is challenging traditional banks by offering the most competitive and least volatile lending rates in crypto (up to 21% APY). It is important to note that Celsius Network, however, is a non-custodial wallet. By nature of it being a lending platform, users can earn interest for lending to Celsius Network or access low-interest collateralized loans instead.

  1. Holds Bitcoin and plenty of others. See a full list here.
  2. You can lend any coin Celsius accepts to earn interest. See a full list here.
  3. Celsius does not have any dApp support currently. Future direct swaps will be possible with its own fork of Uniswap called CelSwap. See more info here.

Celsius Network gets most of its profits from lending to large financial institutions. Up to 80% of the revenue is shared with depositors. Celsius has $2 Billion in assets under management, second only to Greyscale. For customer support, contact Celsius here.

Atomic Wallet

For users who want to do a bit more than just HODL their tokens. With Atomic Wallet, you can earn up to 27% interest through staking, connect to Etherum dApps, and even swap many currencies within the app. All wrapped in a non-custodial Wallet

  1. Holds Bitcoin and plenty of others. See a full list here.
  2. You can stake native coins like Cosmos and Tezos. See a full list here.
  3. Atomic Wallet features Wallet Connect, an open protocol that connects mobile wallets to dApps. Any dApp supporting Wallet Connect also supports Atomic Wallet by default. (join their telegram for questions)

Trust Wallet

For a flagship wallet experience, Trust Wallet has a lot going on. Binance, the largest crypto exchange in the world, designed this wallet themselves for their users. A competitor to Coinbase Wallet, Binance users enjoy a non-custodial option to store, stake, and swap their coins after trading on the main exchange. Trust Wallet enjoys first-class treatment on many Binance Chain (and Binance Smart Chain) related dApps like PancakeSwap.

  1. Holds Bitcoin and plenty of others. See a full list here.
  2. You can stake native coins like Tron and Algorand. See a full list here.
  3. Trust Wallet comes loaded with Wallet Connect, an internal dApp browser, and direct swap integration with Uniswap, Binance DEX, and PancakeSwap. All in one app.

Honorable Mentions

Here are two amazing multi-currency wallets worth mentioning, Torus and XDEFI. Both are at different stages of development. I recommend taking a look at Torus Wallet first. All you need is a social media or email account to log in and get a wallet. Get your secure one-click login with Torus Wallet now! It only takes 30 seconds to start having fun!

Torus Wallet

  1. No Bitcoin. Yet! Torus is only an Ethereum wallet at the moment. They will be a multi-currency wallet hence why I’ve included them in this section. Torus Wallet will soon expand to Avalanche and Cosmos. With independent wallets already adding their own integrations.
  2. Only Etherum DeFi “Staking” is available on dApps that support Torus Wallet. No Native coin staking to speak of yet.
  3. Torus works on mobile and desktop seamlessly. Make a shortcut to this web address for your torus wallet login to manage your funds. Top aggregators like 1inch.Exchange and Zapper.Fi support Torus. Those two dApps alone cover most of the action happening in Defi.

Torus Network manages your private keys eliminating the need for chrome extensions or apps. (Do bear in mind there is a layer of trust involved when using this wallet at the moment, but they have addressed this issue with tKey.)

XDEFI Wallet ( Beta Test Review Coming Soon )

In the beginning, I said multi-currency wallets are best for beginners due to their simplicity, but this might sacrifice dApp connectivity. XDEFI is for the multi-currency power users who won't sacrifice dApp connectivity! I encourage any enthusiast to follow up on XDEFI Wallet’s developments. This one looks juicy!

“Imagine being able to wrap some ETH into WETH directly within your wallet extension, use the WETH to provide liquidity in a Balancer pool, stake the LP tokens in CREAM, and monitor the entire strategy using a single Wallet.”

XDEFI Wallet is currently in Beta testing, so it is not open to the public yet. Look out for my beta test review in the coming weeks into the new year! For more information on XDEFI Wallet, be sure to follow them on Twitter and Medium.
